Sands (The stillbirth and neonatal death charity) asked me to share the poem ‘We took her to the beach’ at the launch of the new MBRRACE report into stillbirth and child mortality in the UK.

The aim was to bring the perspective of the bereaved parents upfront to keep the technical data and dry figures in context for the crowd of obstetricians, midwives and consultants at the launch.

Very interesting to see the effort going into measuring the data and the difficult decisions that have to me made as to how the numbers are interpreted.

Some politicians and parts of the media are likely to use this report as another NHS bashing weapon, but I can assure you that I was in a room full of people who make a difference to people’s lives every day and are wholly focused on finding out what can be done to do an even better job.

I’m not sure if I could use that description if stood in a cabinet meeting.
